Base building incorporating existing townhouse and carriage house. Interiors and furniture.
Washington, DC
New 7 story office building integrated with major portions of the site's existing townhouse and carriage house.
The pavilion contains the main building entrance and an ADA ramp that allows building users of all levels of mobility equal access to the lobby. A major component of the client's mission involves advocating for people with disabilities and injured veterans, so equal access for everyone was an important issue.
Metal panels were mounted on the existing townhouse walls to allow plantings to grow and add green space that is visible from the lobby.
The reconstructed carriage house wall is visible in the double-height conference room.
A portion of the reconstructed carriage house and the large custom pivot door that allows the north conference room to be completely opened to the lobby are visible to the left of the elevators & reception desk.
To maximize open space in the small lobby, the exterior plane of the elevator shaft wall was extended to create the front of the reception desk.
The interior reconstructed portion of the townhouse, reconfigurable custom bench, and the top of the entrance ramp in the foreground. Custom pivot door to north conference room in the background.
Marble statues from the sunken courtyard between the townhouse & carriage house were reclaimed, cleaned and mounted on custom stainless steel shelves.
A projector behind the translucent glass partition at reception provides a simple way to post building announcements and events.
Oversized glazing at the reconstructed townhouse window openings provides views into the lobby and natural light from the west-facing curtain wall while maintaining sound privacy for the conference room.
Detail view of the oversized glazing. Window from the 2nd Floor mezzanine visible beyond.
Open reception area in the 3rd Floor office looking towards the CEO's office.
(My team lead was skeptical about the green upholstery for the guest chairs, but I received many compliments on them after they were installed)
The CEO's office is located in the 3rd Floor of the townhouse space. The finishes are bright and modern, while the shape calls back to the original building
The Vice Presidents office is in the corner where new meets old. The ultimate corner office.
View of the George Washington University Quad, with the CEO's office beyond to the left.
Existing and rebuilt portions of the townhouse and carriage house at bottom, with the new volume above.
